The Golden Plague

As a plague rips apart the Golden City, a group of dark magic practitioners have to fight the new regime for their very existence, while they seek answers about how this plague began and if it can be cured. A Paladin named Vallia, a Demonologist named Krena, and a Sorcerer named Marven will fight the odds and each other in this story about how far people will go to survive.

This is a story I started writing in the spring of 2019, and I spent the next year and a half working on it. I'd write chapters and put them up on FictionPress as I went. I put a lot of myself into this story, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

"It started simple enough. With a cough. Just a cough. A warlock, of some renown, coughed while at the market, then fell over and continued coughing until he passed out. After a fortnight of chills, fevers, and vomiting up a dark miasma, the warlock died. During that fortnight, several other people in the Golden City coughed, then fell to the same symptoms as the warlock. Then several more after that. After six weeks, this magically and medically resistant plague ravaged several districts of the Golden City, sparing some but killing most who showed its symptoms.

On a gloomy morning with a bright blue sky, the bell of the Stellar Cathedral clanged, announcing to the remaining citizens of the Golden City that the last member of their royal family was dead. Taken by the plague. The bell did not announce that the Archbishop of the Chorus of the Bright Star was about to take over as ruler, but the weary and perceptive did not need such an announcement. The Golden City was a bastion of magical study and practice. Practitioners of several disparate magical disciplines traveled from far off places to attend the city’s magical universities and libraries. Many of these practitioners worried that this would change."
